Airflow Stain Removal: A Brighter Smile Without Whitening

If you want a brighter smile but aren’t ready for whitening, or think you don’t need it - then airflow stain removal could be an excellent option to make your teeth look brighter.

What Is Airflow?

Airflow is an advanced cleaning system that uses:

  • Air

  • Water

  • Fine powder

to gently remove stains and plaque from teeth. It is considered better for everyday stain removal (e.g. tea/coffee/red wine) than a regular dental hygiene visit, and can be done as part of your dental hygiene visit.

What Causes Staining?

Common causes of teeth staining include:

  • Coffee and tea

  • Red wine

  • Smoking

  • Certain foods (e.g. spices and food with strong colours)

Benefits of Airflow

  • Quick and effective

  • Gentle on teeth and gums

  • Removes stubborn staining

  • Leaves teeth feeling smooth and clean

Airflow vs Whitening

Airflow removes external stains, while whitening changes the internal colour of teeth. It is important to note that they are different treatments and removal of external stains is a bit like washing a car - it will reveal the original ‘paint colour’ underneath the stains, but it will not change the original colour.

But, for many patients, airflow alone provides a noticeably brighter smile.

Who Is It Suitable For?

Airflow is ideal for:

  • Patients with everyday staining

  • Those with sensitive teeth

  • Regular hygiene maintenance

 FAQs

  • Yes - it’s a safe and widely used treatment. At London Dental Hygiene by tooth, the vast majority of our patients choose airflow, so we do dozens of airflow treatments per day.

  • Results vary depending on diet and habits, but regular visits help maintain brightness created from the removal of everyday stains.

  • No, not at all - the powder used is very soft but specially formulated to give great results. In fact, most patients find it comfortable and even pleasant!

  • Whilst many practices in London charge a considerable amount more for airflow (often up to £50 more), at London Dental Hygiene we want as many patients as possible to benefit from airflow cleaning, so we charge only £10 more for airflow.
